Senior Associate speaks on Cryptocurrency and the Law at Multimedia University

Jeremiah Rais, a Senior Associate of the Firm, was a panellist at the “Unmasking Cryptocurrency, Criminal Activities & Offences in Malaysia” symposium that was recently hosted by the law faculty of Multimedia University on 3 November 2023.

He spoke on the prescription of cryptocurrencies as securities and the application of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 regime to the nascent industry. This included an overview of the relevant guidelines issued by the Securities Commission to govern and regulate digital asset intermediaries.

Jeremiah also discussed the applicability of traditional common law principles in cases involving cryptocurrency transactions and gave real-life examples from Malaysia and beyond where contractual, tortious and intellectual property principles were held to apply in cases involving cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The other panellists, namely Vivek Sukumaran and Desmond Liew, also spoke on cryptocurrencies from criminal law and tax law perspectives while Nurin Irdina Maisarah moderated the session. The Firm extends its appreciation to the law faculty of Multimedia University and looks forward to future collaborations.
